U.S. Green Building Council Awards MedImmune’s Newest Laboratory Space and Fitness Center for Green Design
MedImmune, the global biologics arm of AstraZeneca, announced today that it has been awarded LEED® Gold building certification established by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). Two facilities, the 308,000 square-foot R&D laboratory and 9,800-square-foot fitness center, received the certification. LEED – Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – is the nation’s preeminent program for design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.
“We’re very proud to achieve LEED Gold certification. MedImmune is committed to environmental sustainability and strives to be a good corporate citizen and neighbor to surrounding communities,” said Andy Skibo, Executive Vice President, Operations, MedImmune.
In the R&D laboratory, MedImmune achieved LEED certification for energy use, lighting, water and material use as well as incorporating a variety of other sustainable strategies including:
- heat recovery system
- high-efficiency chilled water and laboratory lighting systems
- high-efficiency, low-emission boilers and emergency generators
- glass; approximately 44% of the building envelope is made of glass, which provides natural light to perimeter laboratories
- less water use; the building uses 40% less water than the established sustainable design baseline
The fitness center is available for employee use and features over 60 pieces of state-of-the-art exercise equipment, two studios and locker rooms. LEED certification was awarded for recycling construction waste and use of product made from recyclable materials. HVAC and lighting design incorporated energy efficiency practices.
“MedImmune’s LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. “The urgency of USGBC’s mission has challenged the industry to move faster and reach further than ever before, and MedImmune serves as a prime example with just how much we can accomplish.”
The R&D laboratory and fitness center are located at the company’s headquarters in Gaithersburg, MD, and join three other AstraZeneca facilities in the United States that have achieved LEED Gold certification.
