While everyone here at MedImmune is focused on the development of first-in-class medicines, our goal is to lead in other areas as well. In fact, we’re bringing in the New Year with a few other “firsts” that have a powerful impact on sustainability—locally, nationally and, ultimately, globally.

At the close of 2014, we received certification under the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Superior Energy Performance™ (SEP) program. That makes us the first biotech company in the United States—and the first in any industry in Maryland—to earn this important status. As part of that certification process, we also obtained our first certification for International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 50001 standard for energy management systems.

The fact that we’re the first biotech company in the country to achieve SEP certification speaks volumes about our business and our people, and what we believe our responsibility is to the environment.

But there’s more. We also received certification from the Montgomery County Green Business Certification Program, which recognizes regional organizations that are taking steps to preserve and improve the environment, and who have demonstrated a commitment to environmental stewardship. And, finally, we were honored with AstraZeneca’s 2014 Global SHE Excellence Award. This one is given annually through AstraZeneca’s global Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) function, which is dedicated to leading, managing and monitoring a commitment to managing environmental impact and promoting the safety, health and wellbeing of employees.

These considerable accomplishments are the result of a strong company-wide commitment to sustainability efforts and significant improvements that we’ve made to our overall energy performance at our Gaithersburg site. What makes each of these certifications and recognitions significant is that they demonstrate how we’ve gone above and beyond basic green measures to reduce our ecological footprint. SEP-certified facilities, for example, are frontrunners in energy management and efficiency improvement, and this makes us part of an innovative leadership movement focused on long-term energy conservation and a sustainable—yet competitive—future.

The business impact of our efforts can’t be understated. We reduced energy consumption by 10 percent with annual savings of $1.2 million, even with significant site growth, and our Water Conservation Plan will reduce annual water consumption by up to 6 percent. Some additional noteworthy initiatives include:

  • The installation of eight electric vehicle charging stations
  • Implementation of commuter van service between campus and metro station
  • Purchase of 10 percent of our electricity from renewable energy sources
  • A recycling rate that exceeds 50 percent, with less than 0.2 percent sent to landfill

We’re proud of these achievements and the fact that what made and continues to make them possible is the passion and dedication of our employees. The goal that we all have is to make the way we work sustainable—for everyone.
